Twelve Indian boxers, including six-time world champion Mary Kom and Asian gold medalist Amit Panghal, have reached the semifinals of the Boksam International Boxing Championships without a single fight. They are just one win away from a medal.
Nine Indian boxers and five other boxers have qualified for the Olympics. Mary Kom (51kg) is entering the fray for the first time since qualifying for the Olympics last year. She will have to face Giordana Sorrentino of Italy in the opening match.
Panghal (52kg) got the upper hand in the opening bout and will face Gabriel Escobar of Spain in the semi-finals. Vikas Krishnan (69kg) will face Italy’s Vincenzo Mangiacapre in the semifinals.
Boxers Ashish Kumar (75kg) and Sumit Sangwan (81kg), who were banned for drug use, are returning, while Satish Kumar (91kg) and Sanjit (91kg) also reached the quarterfinals.
Along with Jasmine and Manisha (57kg), Simranjit Kaur (60kg), Pooja Rani (75kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) also made it to the quarterfinals.
